Questions a Zoho partner should ask before promising a client consolidation
Ten questions to settle before quoting: companies and ownership, currencies and rates, systems, intercompany, the deliverable. What each missed question costs, and three promises to avoid.

In short
Before promising a client consolidation, a Zoho partner should settle ten questions: which companies and what ownership, which currencies and rate source, which systems, how intercompany is booked, what the group reports, who reviews it, and how often. Each answer changes the price, the method and what you can truthfully promise.
Key takeaways
- “Consolidation” means different things to different clients. Ask what they will do with the output before you name a method.
- Ownership and currency decide the most. A partly owned subsidiary and a foreign currency each add a step that a simple add-up misses.
- Zoho Books keeps organizations apart. Zoho’s help pages we checked describe no view that combines them, so promise the group step separately.
- Write the answers down before the quote, not after the first close.
Why does a partner need to ask before promising?
A client who says “we need consolidation” may want a combined profit and loss for the board, a statutory set of group accounts for the auditor, a lender’s covenant report or simply one number for revenue. These are four different jobs with four different levels of effort. A partner who quotes for the smallest and delivers the largest loses money; one who quotes for the largest and delivers the smallest loses the client.
The ten questions below take about an hour with a finance director. They are in the order a conversation tends to go.
What should the partner ask about the companies?
- Which companies are in the group, and in which country? List each one with its legal name and the system its books are in.
- Who owns what? The percentage in each company, and whether it changed this year or will. A subsidiary under 100% needs a non-controlling interestNon-controlling interestThe share of a subsidiary's equity and profit that belongs to owners outside the group.Open the glossary entry every month.
- Which systems? How many companies are in Zoho Books, and how many are elsewhere? Zoho’s help centre says a user can create up to five organizations with one email address by default1, so check how the client’s companies are actually spread across organizations and logins.
Free: Zoho partner discovery questionnaire for multi-company clients
This free Excel questionnaire lists the questions a Zoho partner should ask a client with more than one company before promising consolidation: entities, ownership, currencies, systems, intercompany volume, reporting needs, budgets, deadlines and who owns the work. Each answer is scored, and a scoring sheet suggests a route and flags the questions to settle before quoting.
- Twenty-five questions in nine areas, each with the reason a partner asks it.
- Four answer choices per question, from simple to complex, picked from a list.
What should the partner ask about currency and rates?
- What is the group’s reporting currency? It is the currency the board reads, and it may not be any company’s own.
- Which rates, and who owns them? A closing rate for the balance sheet and an average for the profit and loss4, from one agreed source, applied to every company.
Ask the second question even when the client says it is obvious. Two companies using two rates for the same currency is the commonest reason a group does not tie. The table below shows what four missed questions would do to the example group’s September figures.
| Wrong rate for the dirham profit and lossPalmridge revenue AED 4,800,000 at closing 0.2040, not average 0.2025 | 7,200 |
| Ownership ignored20% of Kestrelwick’s September profit of SGD 120,000 at 0.5850 | 14,040 |
| Intercompany sale left inZenvara’s services to Palmridge, AED 400,000 at 0.2025 | 81,000 |
| Translation reserve not bookedPalmridge, September movement | 38,858 |
| Gross amount wrong in the group figures | 141,098 |
Example group used across Finconsol guides. The total adds the size of each error and is not a single line of the accounts.
What should the partner ask about intercompany and the close?
- What do the companies trade or lend to each other? Goods, services, management fees, loans? In which currency, and booked by whom?
- How is each side booked today? Check that both sides of every pair are entered, and when.
- What is the month-end calendar? The cut-off, the day books are final, and who signs off. A late subsidiary should have an agreed fallback.
- How are closed months protected? Ask who locks each company, when, and how anyone would know a locked month changed.
What should the partner ask about the deliverable?
- What is the output for, and who reviews and sees it? Board, auditor, lender, owners? That decides the format, the notes and the standard (IFRS or US GAAP). Name the reviewers and readers before the first pack, not after.
What should a partner not promise?
Three promises cause trouble later.
- “Zoho Books can do it for you.” Zoho Books has no report that combines organizations (help centre, checked 29 Oct 2026)2. Zoho ERP, a different product, has its own multi-company management; do not mix the two.
- “Zoho Analytics will do it.” Zoho’s partner article combines organizations into one Analytics workspace with rates that are “manually entered”, and does not mention intercompany elimination, a translation reserve or non-controlling interest3. That is a currency conversion, not a consolidation. It can be a good start for a simple group.
- “It will be live.” Say what refresh rate you can actually deliver. A nightly read is honest; real time is a promise to avoid.

How does Finconsol handle this?
Finconsol answers the questions above in a setup the client can see. Each company is entered with its country, currency, source and ownership; Zoho Books companies connect directly (read only, nightly), and Xero, QuickBooks or any other system come in by trial balance. Rates are held once for the group. Intercompany, non-controlling interest, board packs, locked months and the change log follow from the setup.
| Company | Currency | Source | Owned | Avg rate | Closing rate |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Zenvara Group Ltd | GBP | Zoho Books | Parent | 1.0000 | 1.0000 |
| Fernhollow Inc | USD | Trial balance upload | 100% | 0.7540 | 0.7560 |
| Palmridge Hospitality LLC | AED | Trial balance upload | 100% | 0.2025 | 0.2040 |
| Kestrelwick Pte Ltd | SGD | Trial balance upload | 80% | 0.5850 | 0.5870 |
| Quillfern GmbH | EUR | Zoho Books | 100% | 0.8450 | 0.8470 |

Questions
When should a partner say a consolidation is out of scope?
When the client needs statutory group accounts, with notes and a disclosure checklist, and your practice does not produce them. A partner can still set up the monthly management view and hand the statutory step to the client’s auditors or accountants.
How long does the discovery conversation take?
About an hour for a group of five companies if the finance director has an ownership chart and a list of systems to hand. Ask for both in advance.
Do all companies need to be on Zoho Books?
No. Companies on other systems can come in by trial balance. The question is whether each can supply a trial balance on the same date every month, by account and in its own currency.
What if the client does not know the ownership percentages?
Then that is the first job. Every number below the profit and loss depends on them, and a guess shows up in the non-controlling interest and in goodwill.
