Multi-currency

Multi-currency in Zoho Books is not currency translation: the difference for a group

One invoice revalued in a company's own books, and one whole company translated into the group's currency, are two different jobs. This is what each does, with the same September worked through.

In this post 7 sections

In short

Multi-currency in Zoho Books means one company can record invoices and bills in other currencies and revalue them in its own currency. Currency translation is different: it restates a whole subsidiary into the group’s currency so the companies can be added together. The first happens inside a company, the second at group level.

Key takeaways

  • Transaction currency is about one invoice. Translation is about a whole company’s accounts.
  • The two differences land in different places: revaluation in profit or loss, translation in a reserve in equity.
  • Zoho Books handles the first. Zoho’s help pages we checked do not describe the second.
  • A group needs both, done in this order: revalue in each company, then translate.

What is the difference between the two?

People search for “multi-currency” and expect it to solve group reporting. It solves a different problem. There are two separate questions, and each has its own rates and its own answer.

Both use exchange rates, which is why they get confused. But one is about a balance in a single company, and the other about the whole company’s accounts.

What does a transaction in another currency look like?

Zenvara, the UK parent, invoices a customer in the United States USD 100,000 on 31 August 2026, when the rate is 0.7500. The receivable is GBP 75,000 in its books. The customer has not paid by 30 September, when the rate is 0.7560. Zenvara revalues the receivable.

Exhibit 1. Revaluing one invoice in Zenvara’s own booksGBP
Receivable on 31 AugustUSD 100,000 at 0.750075,000
Receivable on 30 SeptemberUSD 100,000 at 0.756075,600
Exchange gain in Zenvara’s profit or loss600

Example group used across Finconsol guides. The invoice and the customer are illustrations; the customer is an outside party.

Zoho’s currency adjustment page describes this step: you go to Accountant, then Currency Adjustments, and add an adjustment by setting the new exchange rate of the foreign currency against the organization’s base currency1. Checked against Zoho’s help centre on 29 Oct 2026. That gain of 600 belongs to Zenvara’s own profit and stays in the group’s profit.

Free: Translation reserve workbook

This free Excel workbook works out the month's movement in the translation reserve for up to five foreign subsidiaries. You enter the opening net assets, the profit and three rates, and it shows how each part of the movement arises, with a check that the result ties. A worked example is filled in.

  • Inputs for up to five subsidiaries, in each subsidiary's own currency.
  • The movement on opening net assets, on profit, and on capital or dividends, worked out by formula.

What does translation do to a whole company?

Palmridge Hospitality LLC keeps its books in dirhams. It has no pounds in it. To appear in the group accounts it is restated: net assets of AED 13,905,000 at the closing rate of 0.2040 become GBP 2,836,620. Because its profit is translated at the average rate of 0.2025 and its net assets at 0.2040, and because the closing rate moved during the month, the translated figures do not balance by themselves. The balancing figure for September is GBP 38,858 in the translation reserve.

No invoice was revalued and no one made a mistake. The reserve is what happens when a foreign business is measured in a different currency from the one it earns in.

Total exchange effect in group comprehensive income39,458

The 600 is reported in profit or loss. The 38,858 is not, and does not reach profit until Palmridge is sold.

Both items belong in the group’s total comprehensive income, but they are reported in different places, and an auditor reading the accounts looks for each in its own line.4

Does Zoho Books do the translation?

Zoho’s currencies page describes adding currencies and exchange rates to an organization. Its currency adjustment page revalues open foreign-currency balances in the organization’s base currency. Neither page, as checked on 29 Oct 2026, mentions restating one organization into another’s currency for a group report12.

For several organizations with different base currencies, Zoho’s partner article builds a Zoho Analytics query that multiplies amounts by rates typed into the query. It says those rates are “manually entered”, and it does not mention eliminations, non-controlling interest or a translation reserve3. That is a currency conversion of amounts, not a translation of statements.

In what order should a group do the two?

First, each company revalues its open foreign-currency balances in its own books and closes the month. Then the group translates the closed trial balances. Doing it the other way round translates figures that are about to change. Apply one rate set to both steps, so the same dirham does not have two values in one report.

How does Finconsol handle this?

Finconsol starts where the ledgers stop. It reads each company’s closed books, from Zoho Books directly (read only, every night) or from a trial balance for Xero, QuickBooks or any other system, and translates them with one group rate table. The reserve is shown by company, so a movement like the 38,858 above can be traced to its rates.

Zoho Books keeps doing what it does well: each company’s books, in its own currency.

Translation is a group step on closed books. It sits beside, not inside, each company’s own multi-currency.

Questions

Is multi-currency in Zoho Books the same as consolidation?

No. Multi-currency lets one organization transact in other currencies. Consolidation combines several companies, and when they use different currencies it also translates them. Zoho’s help pages we checked describe the first.

Why does the translation reserve appear if nothing was revalued?

Because profit is translated at the average rate and net assets at the closing rate, and the closing rate moves. The gap is an exchange difference in equity, not a gain or loss.

Do I revalue intercompany balances before or after translation?

Before. Each company revalues its own open foreign-currency balances and closes, then the group translates. Exchange differences on intercompany balances need a separate decision on whether they eliminate.

Can Zoho Analytics convert the currencies for a group report?

Zoho’s partner article does it with hand-entered rates in a query. It converts amounts, and does not mention eliminations or a translation reserve.
